MILC: Mother & Infant Lactation Care

While our priority is to give you a single provider for all of your care, we work hard to function as a team and communicate with each other if you are seeing more than one of us.

{Our Staff}

Ellen Chetwynd RN BSN MPH IBCLC: Ellen has worked as a lactation consultant for over ten years in a number of different settings. Outside of the birth center, she does breastfeeding research, and is involved in advocating for IBCLCs and breastfeeding mothers in North Carolina.

Nancy Albrecht RN BSN MA IBCLC:  Nancy has worked in women’s health for over 25 years and as the Nurse Manager of WBWC, has a wealth of knowledge about birth and breastfeeding that she brings to her practice.

Elley Schopler RN BSN IBCLC: Elley has been a lactation consultant for over ten years and has a special affinity for mothers just learning to breastfeed for the first time.

Lactation Consult Services: Certified lactation consultants (IBCLCs) are on staff five days a week at Women’s Birth and Wellness Center (WBWC) to provide full service care and support for mothers and babies experiencing difficulties with breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding Classes: We offer breastfeeding classes two evenings a month for both mothers and fathers. Classes are free to women who are giving birth at Women’s Birth and Wellness Center, and $25 for anyone coming in from the community.

{Our Story }

Women’s Birth and Wellness Center has a rich history of providing quality out of hospital births for women. The lactation services were developed and grew in response to women’s needs, and IBCLCs have been practicing alongside the midwives at WBWC since it began in 1996. Since 2006, we have grown our lactation services to include offering our IBCLCs to families in the community as well as those who have given birth at the Birth Center. As the need grew, the number of lactation consultants and the number of appointments offered has grown to match it.

Women’s Birth and Wellness Center was the second birthing facility in the state of North Carolina to receive Baby Friendly status and has been recognized both by Baby Friendly USA and Carolina Global Breastfeeding Institute for this accomplishment. We have also received recognition as a Breastfeeding Friendly Business and Workplace by the North Carolina Breastfeeding Coalition. Our breastfeeding rates at the Women’s Birth and Wellness Center are high (99% at discharge), and we make an effort not just to support the women who give birth at the birth center, but also all of the women needing breastfeeding help in our community.

We will continue to grow our practice and our breastfeeding community in response to what families tell us they need. Please feel free to call Women’s Birth and Wellness Center if you would like to talk to one of our Lactation Consultants.
